Mammography/stereotactic breast biopsy
Halifax Regional Hospital's radiology department consists of state-of-the-art equipment including two mammography rooms and a stereotactic breast biopsy room. The stereotactic breast biopsy room contains a digital Fischer Mammotest that allows us to perform minimal invasive breast biopsies.

What is mammography?
A mammogram is a very low-dose x-ray of the breast using specialized equipment and technologists. This technique provides the sharpest images of the inner structures of the breast and has been developed to detect lumps or abnormalities before they can be felt during physical examinations. This early detection of breast cancer saves lives.

The quality of mammograms has improved vastly during the past 10 years. However, because mammograms are not 100 percent accurate, it is important for women also perform monthly breast self-examinations and have a yearly physical examination of their breasts by their physician. The findings of the mammograms, as well as recommendations for further evaluation or follow-up examinations, which are also available on-site, will be sent to your referring physician. You will also receive by mail a report summarizing your exam.

Each radiologist who participates in breast disease evaluation has received extensive education in this area and participates in intensive continuing medical education on a regular basis. Our technologists are highly dedicated, sensitive professionals, all of whom have received additional certification and training in breast imaging. The American College of Radiology and the Food and Drug Administration has granted accreditation in our mammography services.

What is a stereotactic breast biopsy?
When a patient has a questionable area identified by mammography or ultrasound, we offer stereotactic biopsy as an alternative to an open-excision biopsy. It is minimally invasive, less risky, causes no post-procedure disability, looks better and is less expensive than an operative procedure. Patients are positioned comfortably lying in a prone position on a special table for the procedure.
