Classes

We offer classes in:

Prepared childbirth

Our prepared childbirth class teaches all forms of pain management and is not just specific for natural childbirth. This class covers pregnancy and the labor process including postpartum and newborn information. Topics covered include nutrition, exercise, stress relief and relaxation techniques. Classes can be tailored to suit individual needs. Abbreviated refresher classes are available upon request for anyone who has previously taken a childbirth class.

The material is covered in four sessions during a one-month period. Classes meet from 7:00 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. at Halifax Regional Hospital.

  • February 16 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
  • April 12 (8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.)
  • June 5, 12, 19, 26 (7:00 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.)

Baby Basics and Beyond

This class teaches all aspects of baby care including bottle-feeding, breast-feeding, burping techniques, sleep positions, types of clothing needed, and introduces the latest baby care products. Participants learn how to hold and handle their baby, as well a how to bathe and swaddle their infant. Safety issues are discussed including bathing, feeding, childproofing the home, and car seat safety. Participants discuss signs and symptoms of illness and learn when to call a doctor and what information to have available for him/her. Participants also receive helpful information regarding over the counter items to keep on hand, and the proper way to check a temperature. Additional topics covered include umbilical cord and circumcision care, preparing siblings for the arrival of the new baby, age appropriate toys and the importance of reading to young children. The instructor involves the family and provides a wealth of useful handouts.

The material is covered in one session. Classes meet from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Halifax Regional Hospital.

Breastfeeding Class

Our free breastfeeding class is designed to promote a successful breastfeeding experience for mom and baby. Topics include basic lactation, advantages of breastfeeding, correct positions and latch-on techniques, breast care and feeding difficulties.

The material is covered in one session. Classes meet from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Halifax Regional Hospital.
