Surgical Services

When you need surgery, Halifax Regional Hospital is here for you. Whether you are with us for a short test or procedure or for surgery requiring a stay in the hospital, our physicians, staff and volunteers are prepared to help make your time with us as pleasant as possible for both you and your family.

Endoscopy

Our endoscopic suite includes procedure rooms utilizing state-of-the-art Olympus equipment, a recovery area with datascope monitoring capabilities, and an exceptional staff prepared to make your stay with us as safe and comfortable as possible. We offer:

  • Bronchoscopy
  • Colonoscopy
  • Cystocopy
  • Esophagoscopy
  • Sigmoidoscopy
  • ERCP procedures
  • Liver biopsy
  • Bone marrow aspirations
  • Secretin stimulating testing
  • Manometry equipment
  • Minor OR cases
  • Paracentesis

Outpatient/Ambulatory Surgery

When you are having outpatient surgery, you will come into the hospital in the morning and will be ready to go home later that day. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home, so make sure that you have a family member or friend with you to drive you home. Our outpatient surgical specialties include:

  • Laparoscopic and conventional surgery
  • Gynecology
  • GI
  • Ophthalmology
  • Oral/maxillofacial
  • Orthopedic (including arthroscopic and total joint replacement)
  • Ear, nose and throat
  • Thoracic
  • Vascular

Other procedures done in outpatient surgery include:

  • Steroid epidurals
  • Blood transfusions
  • IV therapy

Our preoperative area is equipped with 16 private bays with TVs, monitors, suction and oxygen ports.

Same-Day Surgery

When you are scheduled for same-day surgery, you will be prepared for surgery in the ambulatory/outpatient surgery department on the second floor and then transported to the main operating room on the first floor. After surgery, you will be kept for an hour or more in the recovery room before being taken to your room on the floor. The type of surgery performed will determine your length of stay in the hospital.
