Education
Halifax Regional Health System believes that education plays a major role in both the prevention and healing of illnesses. Our educational efforts are directed toward our staff, our patients and residents, their families and the community.
Staff Education
Our physicians and staff take pride in keeping up with current best-practice trends and participate regularly in continuing education programs. Our staff members receive up-to-date training from our on-site health educators, attend conferences and educational programs, and completes yearly competency exams ensuring that they are well-versed and knowledgeable in all areas of their work.
Patient Education
Our staff is prepared to provide our patients, residents and families with a wide variety of educational materials (brochures, instructional handouts, videos and discussion) to help them understand their conditions and prepare for the future. Patients at Halifax Regional Hospital have access to The Patient Channel, a 24 hour television service providing information about a wide spectrum of care topics. Patients being discharged from the hospital are given a discharge packet, including information useful for continued recovery. Residents of our long-term care facilities and their families are encouraged to participate in quarterly care plan meetings to fully understand treatment plans.
Health Nite Out
Halifax Regional Health System’s Health Nite Out series offers lecture and discussions covering a wide variety of topics of interest to the community. Led by our physicians, these programs are designed to keep the community updated on the most recent information concerning symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions and diseases. Diabetes Education
Halifax Regional Hospital offers personal and group instruction in all aspects of diabetes management. This service is free to anyone in the community. Click here for our diabetes group class schedule. Registration is required. Call 434.517.3221 or register online.
Nutrition Classes
Halifax Regional’s nutrition and food services department offers classes about healthy eating: Eating for a Healthy Heart, Eating for a Healthy Weight and Pediatric Nutrition Class. Click here to learn more.
Speaker’s Bureau
Halifax Regional Health System has a speaker’s bureau ready to meet with community organizations about a variety of health and healthy living issues. If your club, civic group, church or school needs a speaker, please contact the marketing and public relations department at 434.517.3946.
Support Groups
Halifax Regional Health System hosts numerous support groups free of charge and open to anyone in the community. Click here for more information.
Maternity and Newborn Education
We offer classes including: Prepared Childbirth, Breastfeeding, and Baby Basics and Beyond, as well as a Refresher Childbirth class. Click for more information.
Long-Term Care Family Nights
