Giving Opportunities

Funds for Halifax Regional Health System’s tuition assistance programs and Halifax Regional Hospice come from the generosity of individuals who recognize the importance of quality health care.

Educational support
Since 1983 over 700 individuals have received scholarship and tuition assistance from Halifax Regional Health System.

Project Prime
Project PRIME (Public Rally for Individual Medical Education) offers tuition assistance to individuals interested in pursuing a career in health care.  Established in 1983 with contributions from residents and local businesses, Project PRIME awards funds to successful applicants wishing to become certified nursing assistants, licensed practical nurses, registered nurses, radiology technicians, certified or registered respiratory therapists, laboratory technicians, nuclear medicine technicians, physical or occupational therapists and other health care positions.  Funds may also be used for the further education of individuals already in the health care field of their choice.

Since established, nearly one million dollars, interest from the PRIME endowment, has been awarded.

The Dr. Jesse J. Bates Scholarship
Established in 2003, the Dr. Jesse J. Bates Scholarship was named to honor the late Dr. Jesse J. Bates.  Funds from the Dr. Jesse J. Bates Scholarship are awarded to graduating high school seniors in the Halifax Regional Health System service area who are pursuing higher education in the health care field.  The first recipients of the Dr. Jesse J. Bates Scholarship were named in the spring of 2004.

The Crowell Fund
Named in memory of long time Halifax Regional Health System board of directors member Thomas A. Crowell, Jr., interest from the Crowell Fund is used to purchase materials for use in the T.A.Crowell, Jr. Memorial Library, Halifax Regional Health System’s medical library.

Halifax Regional Hospice
Hospice offers medical, emotional and spiritual care to those in the final phases of a terminal illness. Funds donated to Hospice are used to provide excellent end of life care to patients and their families regardless of their ability to pay.
