Halifax Regional Health System is committed to technologically advancing care without sacrificing personal touch. As a Planetree Affiliate, we embrace the philosophy that our patients, residents, families and the community are best served by utilizing the latest in medical technology in a patient centered and nurturing environment.

With a goal of personalizing, humanizing and demystifying health care, HRHS began its Planetree journey in 2005 by implementing programs consistent with the ten elements of patient-centered care: Human Interaction; Architectural and Interior Design Conductive to Health and Healing; The Importance of the Nutritional  and Nurturing Aspects of Food; Empowering Patients through Information and Education; The Importance of Family, Friends and Social Support; Spirituality: The Importance of Inner Resources; The Importance of Human Touch; Healing Arts: Nutrition for the Soul; Complementary Therapies and Healthy Communities.

Guided by a steering committee representing staff, physicians, volunteers and the board of directors, initiatives range from the simple, such as purchasing new, and more dignified patient gowns and implementing relaxed visiting hours to the complex, such as incorporating Planetree design components in the planned expansion of patient and family rooms.

As the journey continues, decisions are made keeping patient centered care at the forefront.
